The True Measure of a Man :: Goodness Ethics Morals Essays
The True Measure of a Man Being a good person is something that everyone strives to do. For most, it is a subconscious thing we do. For others being a good person is a way of life, not just a superficial ââ¬Å"look at me and what I do,â⬠but a deep spiritual understanding that everything one does in their daily life is beneficial to others around that person. For starters, one must define the words good and bad. Dictionary.comââ¬â¢s definition of a good person is ââ¬Å"a person who is good to other people.â⬠Its definition for a bad person is ââ¬Å"a person who does harm to others.â⬠Both of these are vague so one must venture into the definitions of the words good and bad. The definition found at www.dictionary.com for the word good is, ââ¬Å"Socially correct, proper, beneficial to others, valid or effectual under the law, characterized by honesty and fairness.â⬠The definition of bad is, ââ¬Å"Not achieving an adequate standard, evil, sinful, unfavorable, having undesirable or negative qualities.â⬠It seems as if the public has determined the meaning of good and bad to be whatever they want it to mean. This paper is going to use good and bad in relation to people; where good is benefiting someone, and bad is hindering someone. In the story of Robin Hood, Robin begins his life as a law abiding citizen. After his father is killed, the sheriff of Nottingham denies him his fatherââ¬â¢s place as a ranger. He is coerced into killing a deer in front of a large group of lawmen, making him a criminal. From that point in the story Robin becomes a member of the Sherwood men. These men do not just live in Sherwood Forest; they take a toll from anyone who is passing through the forest. All of these men are deemed outlaws by the local sheriff, and his military. By being pronounced as outlaws, it makes them bad people who break the laws. From a different point of view, they might be outlaws but they chose that life because they were breaking unjust laws. They as a group agreed to break any law they thought was unjust and unfair to the people of England, while pledging full allegiance to the king of England. In a public view these people were bad men, but one who came to know then could see them as good men wh o wanted the best for England and all of its people.

High School Speech Materialism and Money
We Have become largely materialistic as a society. Nowadays the size of your income is the point that defines you and happiness is the latest Ipod. Now just take a moment to consider. What was it that made you happy as a toddler? Was it that you had the latest Pumpkin patch fashions? Or perhaps it was that your parentââ¬â¢s earnt more than your best friends parents? No it was simply the love and affection of your parents, a sense of achievement when you achieved something and the companionship of people your own age. You see, I think those toddlers are onto a good thing. I believe that we as the young people of New Zealand place far to much emphasis on the importance of money. If you think about it, all that money causes is bad things; Debt, relationship problems, and inter-class prejudice. Money has such a strong influence over our lives, so much so that it often causes relationship problems. Many couples have put relationship problems down to financial problems. Debt and lack of income place major financial stresses on people. As a result their relationships with friends and sexual partners suffer. This can often lead to domestic violence, alcoholism and abuse. Recently a survey was conducted by a New Zealand relationship service. This survey revealed that 41% of couples experiencing relationship problems blamed their financial issues. A representative from the National relationship service declared that the groups of people most susceptible to domestic violence were young couples experiencing relationship troubles. Weââ¬â¢ve all seen the massive controversy in the media about Slumdog millionaire Actress, Rubina Aliââ¬â¢s father tries to sell her. If money were such a brilliant thing why it was the very reason for a father trying to sell his daughter? His very own flesh and blood? Breaking up a whole family. I believe that if we were to place less importance on money then many relationships would benefit greatly. Debt is a major intrusion into peopleââ¬â¢s everyday lives. Debt is becoming a far more predominant issue. This is because a lot of the younger generations are un educated about the consequences of using credit and eftpos cards. They are also unaware of how to keep their accounts under control. Debt has become more of an issue in recent years with the introduction of electronic devices. Credit cards now allow people to spend heir money in advance meanwhile they are charged large amounts of interest. Because they are unable to physically ââ¬Ëspend their money people are often fooled into spending large amounts of money. This is essentially a loan. The credit companies then charge the customer high interest rates and by the time the customer pays-off this debt they have paid almost twice the amount for an item in orde r to use their money in advance. The amount of debt an average New Zealander racks up is increasing. Take for example, a survey carried out by the Reserve bank of New Zealand in 2001. This survey stated that the average amount of debt as a New Zealander had increased by 10% over the ten year period since 1991 This is a leading cause for depression and mental illness. I believe that if proper education about money was given and the use of technology with money was reduced then money would become less of an intrusion into our everyday lives. Money encourages discrimination and prejudice. Society is quite distinctly split into different ââ¬Ëclassesââ¬â¢. These ââ¬Ëclassesââ¬â¢ are majorly influenced by, Yes you guessed it, Money. Why should someone be any less of a person just because they have a smaller income than the next person? The universal declaration of human rights declares that each person is entitled to certain things. Sadly are unable to access such things as they have a small income. Many low income families find that they are frowned upon by the ââ¬ËUpper classesââ¬â¢. One such person, a student, was mocked and taunted by her peers as her family had to carry out a ââ¬Ëpaper runââ¬â¢ to help sustain their family. As ashamed as I am to say it I stood back and watched while such blatant discrimination was taking place right in front of me. This is just one example of inner-class prejudice. The government also shows prejudice towards different classes by providing subsidies for health care and other services. Families qualify for these benefits by being under a certain income. Often families with incomes just slightly above the qualification standard often struggle to pay for such services but receive no subsidy. To qualify for a community services card a family must have a combined income of less than seventy thousand dollars per annum. A family earning seventy two thousand dollars per annum had a child that became critically ill. Because their income was two thousand dollars higher than the requirement this family received no financial help from the government and as a result they are now in major debt. I believe that inter class prejudice would become less of an issue and the lifestyle of many people would improve if less emphasis were put on money. So as the young people of New Zealand we need to take a stand and make a difference! Lets stop our consumer society form being consumed! We need to realize how the influence of money affects our relationships, emotions and attitudes towards others.

Honour Killing An Evil Of Society - 2216 Words
Honour Killing: An Evil of Society with reference to Khap Panchayat Introduction Honour Killingââ¬â¢ is a cultural crime or a cultural tradition prevalent amongst non-Caucasian Societies which perceive women as bearers of family honour. Honour Killing of women can be defined as acts of murder in which a woman is killed for her actual or perceived immoral behavior. Indian cultures are very deep rooted. An honour killing (also called a customary killing) is the murder of a (typically female) family or clan member by one or more fellow (mostly male) family members, in which the perpetrators (and potentially the wider community) believe the victim to have brought dishonour upon the family, clan, or community. Many young people in India have been done to death every year owing to ââ¬ËHonour Killings.ââ¬â¢ It is because so called honour killings are based on the belief, deeply rooted in Indian cultures, which consider the women as objects and commodities, and not as human beings endowed with dignity and rights. Most honour killings occur in countries like I ndia where the concept of women is considered as a vessel of the family reputation. This paper is an attempt to tackle the very important issue of a cultural crime that is magnifying day by day like a monster untamed. Interestingly, green synthesis has proven many advantages to synthesis AgNPs over any other approaches due to low cost, non-toxicity, repeatability, bulk production, environmental friendly, less time consuming, ease of synthesis, avoiding capping agents used in chemical synthesis etc.15 Number of biological method to synthesized metal nanoparticles are available in liter ature, such as, using microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and plants.16,17 But this process involves the tedious procedure of maintaining microbial cultures. Analysis of the Effect of Culture Within an Organization Free Essays
Analyze the effect of culture within an organization Charles I Ojunta LDR/531 January, 21,2013 James F Traylor R FC. CFM. Analyze the effect of culture within an organization One of the primary responsibilities of strategic leaders is to create and maintain the organizational characteristics that reward and encourage collective effort. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of the Effect of Culture Within an Organization or any similar topic only for you Order Now . The most fundamental of this is organizational culture. Organization culture is defined as a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguish the organization from other organizations. It develops to help organizations cope with its environment. Strong culture provides stability to an organization. The culture of an organization consists of the shared norms, values, and believes of members.. By establishing a strong culture, leaders can indirectly influence the attitudes and behaviors of members (Schein 1992) But it is not for every organization. For some organizations it is a major barrier to change.. Many managers have failed in implementing a new strategy for a new vision for the company due to poor analysis of the organizational culture Culture provides a way to control and coordinate the actions of people without the need for elaborate formal control systems or continuous use of direct influence attempts (Tushman Oââ¬â¢Reilly 1996). There are Six Characteristics of organizational culture. As follows Innovation and risk taking, Attention to details, Outcome orientation, Aggressiveness and stability.. Organizational culture can be one of the most important factors in whether a large company succeeds or fails, but it is also one of the hardest things to change about a company , since by its very definition, organizational culture is shared through out the entire company. In analyzing a companyââ¬â¢s organizational culture, three core areas are critical each of which is futher broken down to create a list of key concepts which are critical to the process of reviewing the organization. The three areas are Elements of organizational culture,, the company must look at the contents of the organizational culture, and then the subculture that exists within the dominant culture of the company, The organizational culture of the company refers to the basic assumptions , values and beliefs that the organizations supposed to be based on.. The business organizational culture is looked at in terms of what the business considers important ant or unimportant. Within every company, there is also subcultures or a number of subcultures that exist in conjunction with (or sometimes in opposition to ) the organizational culture. Although sub cultures are considered rebellious groups within the organization, but some subcultures can also serve an important function in understanding the operations of the company and therefore can be an asset therefore they are an important and critical concept in understanding the company as a whole it gives you insight into problem areas in the organization. It is necessary to examine the relationship between that culture and the companyââ¬â¢s ethics. in three areas, Knowledge management, Anchors of organizational behavior and work place values. Organizations must look at the procedures by which such knowledge is obtained and passed along as well as the organizational memory of the company. In assessing the organizational behavior of the companyââ¬â¢ s status with these. In this area the assessment is focused on the importance of values in the work place and the idea of corporate social responsibility A complete analysis of the company requires a final look at the process of group and team formation within the company. This will involve the development of the four other concepts of leadership and culture that are of importance to the companyââ¬â¢s analysis-work teams . ffectiveness, cooperation among teams and team inaction and team building efforts. In essence ,the core functions of all these concepts is to generate greater understanding of the companyââ¬â¢s ability to make use of teams within the existing organizational culture with the purpose of increasing positive relationship between the existing cultures and the company stated ethics. Therefore an analysis of an organizational culture can greatly enhance the efficiency in the work place. Employees form an overall subjective perception of the organization based on such factors as degree of risk tolerance, team emphasis, and support of people.. This overall perception becomes, in effect, the organizations culture or personality.. National Defence University. (2009 04). Organizational Culture. Looking at Sonnet 12 by William Shakespeare and I Look into my Glass by Thomas Hardy Essay Example For Students
Looking at Sonnet 12 by William Shakespeare and I Look into my Glass by Thomas Hardy Essay First of all the most obvious theme in these poems is time. The poem Sonnet 12 is set in the 16th century and was written by Shakespeare. I Look into My Glass was written in 1898 by Thomas Hardy. These two poems are both quite dark and depressing. In I Look into My Glass is about a person who is suffering from the affects of time. We learn this because he tells us by saying that he looks in to his mirror his glass. In the rest of the poem he attracts the readers attention by focusing on himself and his looks. In the second line he describes a bit of himself, And view my wasting skin, suggesting that his skin is old and wrinkled which suggests that he is old. In the third line the persona describes how he is disappointed at how he looks he describes it through a prayer, Would God it came to pass, My heart had shrunk as thin This presents him as a very sad person who is almost begging for God to help him. Moreover he also conveys a feeling of loneliness through the same words, this time the persona is focusing on his feelings rather than his looks. In the next verse then again the persona talks about his loneliness which is portrayed through the words, By hearts grown cold to me. He also mentions the word equanimity in the next line which creates an atmosphere of even temper which links in with his loneliness. This implies that he is not angry about this but more depressed about it. He wishes he could accept how people how people have deserted him but he cant. The next verse shows Hardy personifying time. In the third line he mentions how, Shakes my fragile frame at eve which emphasises the point that he is weak and old, fragile frame meaning his weak bones and body. He draws a mental picture of him with the words which amplify his outward looks. Hardy in this verse tells us that his looks have been sucked out by Time. He personifies time like a thief. He does this because something untouchable can be described much better as a person therefore more aggressive and better effects are achieved, in this instance at least. So he describes Time as a person as a stealer, someone sucking life away. Sonnet 12 by William Shakespeare is about him trying to explain how time affects nature and other things. Firstly we find this out when Shakespeare talks about the power of day and night which is like death if it is compared. He conveys this through words in the second line, And see the brave day sunk in the hideous night. These words Brave day meaning life and sunk meaning life being swallowed by the hideous night which could represent death. That line also suggests that night is parallel to day and creates balance. It describes the change over of day and night and how one always replaces the other. In the third line he implies how even flowers are not the same as they used to be and that this is permanent, he presents this by saying, When I behold the violet past prime. Secondly, in the next line Shakespeare brings in the idea of some contrast between old people and young ones, with the words, And sable curls, all silvered oer with white. The words silvered and white draw a mental picture of parallel between people with white hair and dark hair. .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 , .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .postImageUrl , .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 , .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:hover , .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:visited , .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:active { border:0!important; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:active , .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9 .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u94cc1a6b9a80fac387c8c9967eb32cf9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dead Poets Society: Film Techniques EssayThis suggests that old people have old white hair and younger people have dark hair. This implies that when you get older you hair colour goes white and you cant do anything about it. So in these four lines Shakespeare describes the existence of life, death and power. In the next four lines Shakespeare talks about nature. He talks about how it has been affected by time. He mentions that they are not the same as they used to be. First of all he depicts things not being the same as they used to be through the words, When lofty trees I see barren of leaves. This implies that the big trees have no leaves anymore. In the seventh line he then links Time and nature with food that has been made by nature and how all the crops have been collected because the factor time has affected them. Shakespeare evokes this by saying, And summers green all girded up in sheaves. This suggests that summer has gone and its goods have been collected. In the next four lines Shakespeare talks about his part of life being affected by time. Firstly he talks about his own woman being affected by time then other women. He says, Then of thy beauty do I question make This focuses on his woman, meaning that sooner or later even his beautiful woman will have her looks sucked away by the powerful time. In the eleventh line Shakespeare mentions that all people that are born are doomed to the effects of time straight away. He represents this by saying, Since sweets and beauties do them selves forsake, And die as fast as they see others grow. This also emphasises that Time is a fast killer, that it affects you quickly, that it changes you quickly and makes you die quickly. In the next two lines he personifies time and this couplet, rhymes and sums up the final point of the poem. In those two lines the persona says that you cant fight against time or his weapon the Scythe and that the only means of defence against is to reproduce. He displays this through words breed, to brave him when takes thee hence. He personifies time in these two lines because you can describe time much better as a person rather than a thing. Shakespeare draws time to make him look like a powerful evil person which has a destructive weapon the scythe. These two lines finish off very well because in the above lines he describes what time is and then and the end he personifies him and gives him a little detail and shape. The poem I Look into My Glass is a just a poem following the pattern A, B, A, B and it is written in quatrains. It is quite a fast sounding poem and its structure and pace link in with the theme, time, which is the key. The speed suggests that time is fast, attacks quickly and that it is a destructive thing. Where as Sonnet 12 is a Shakespearian sonnet. At the end it has a couplet which rhymes and these two last lines sum up the poem. The main body of the poem is twelve lines, the first eight concentrating on nature and the next four on his love. This links in with the theme, time, and suggests that different things get affected differently and at different speeds. Furthermore, the couplets at the end, sum up all these things and this creates an affect of a faster rhyme which finishes off the poem well and gives out a positive feel. The comparison between these two poems I think are that first of all the poets take a different attitude to the looks of beauty. .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf , .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .postImageUrl , .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf , .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:hover , .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:visited , .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:active { border:0!important; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:active , .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2ab8e803e6784a9a566cfd510a075ddf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Shadow By Jane Urquhart EssayShakespeare when he talks about it he talks about it in general involving all people. In contrast, Hardy talks about himself mainly which creates sympathy for his plight from the reader. Another one is that the structures of the poems are different. One similar thing they do is that they both create similar atmospheres which are sad and regretful, though there is no shred of hope conveyed at all in Hardys poem. Shakespeare treats time as killer, as death with his scythe and that he is preparing to kill you from the moment you are born. He uses dark and depressing words to make a scary atmosphere. His layout of the poem evokes different speeds, each section showing time acting differently which is a great idea I think makes the poem more interesting and makes you think more after you have read each section. Thomas Hardy uses a different layout in his poem and it is focused on him which creates a sad and depressing atmosphere. Moreover, he uses sad words to emphasise this. Both of the poets treat time as a bad thing and dont mention anything good that it does.
